American Airlines baggage allowance: how many rooms and what is the size limit

On flights operated by American Airlines, the number and weight of baggage allowed depends on the destination and the class of travel.

The American carrier allows its passengers to carry hand luggage of maximum dimensions: 9 Inch (23cm) x 14 Inch (36cm) x 22 Inch (56 cm). The maximum weight is not specified but the passenger must be able to lift their baggage themselves to store it in the luggage compartment of the aircraft.

It is also possible to take a smaller accessory (handbag, laptop bag, etc.) which should be placed under the front seat.

Planning and organizing your luggage in advance is essential for hassle-free travel on an American Airlines aircraft. Knowing what to do and what to pack while meeting the restrictions applied by your airline in terms of transporting suitcases, animals, children’s luggage, medical equipment, etc.
The American company will once again allow its customers who have opted for the base Economy class fare to carry one personal item and one hand baggage free of charge in the cabin, like the other fares in the main cabin.

The current Oneworld alliance company base fare rules will continue to apply: for luggage, a personal item that fits under the seat (such as a handbag or small backpack) is allowed in the cabin. No baggage that must be placed in the storage is tolerated; larger luggage, such as trolley bags, will need to be checked in. A second carry-on baggage presented for boarding will be billed at the checked baggage rate (starting at $ 25), plus a tax of $ 25. Elite customers and eligible members of the AAdvantage credit card are permitted to bring one small piece of personal luggage and a trolley bag into the cabin; they keep their free checked baggage allowance.

Transport of liquids: The rules to follow

You are able to take liquids in your hand luggage as long as they are properly packed in a transparent, plastic bag that is well sealed. The volume of each plastic bag is limited to 3.4 oz / 100ml. The clear bag should be 8 inch x 8 inch (20cm x 20cm) at most.

Place all liquid containers in a separate clear plastic zippered bag no larger than 8 ” x 8 ” (20cm x 20cm) or measure 1/4 / 1 liter.

Items should fit comfortably in the bag so that it closes completely and should be inspected separately from other carry-on baggage.

Remove the plastic bag from the carry-on baggage at the security checkpoint for separate x-ray screening.

Passengers traveling abroad to the United States or any country in the European Union (including the United Kingdom, Norway, Iceland and Switzerland), as well as Japan and Korea, and having a connecting flight, will be permitted to carry liquids in excess of 3.4 oz / 100 ml in their carry-on baggage, provided they have been purchased at duty-free shops or on board an aircraft and placed in bags secure and tamper-evident, with proof of purchase visually displayed inside the bag.

Medications, infant formula, food and breast milk are permitted in reasonable amounts exceeding 3.4 oz / 100 ml and do not need to be in the zip bag. Report these items for inspection at the security checkpoint. Screening officers may need to open these items for additional screening.

Liquids that cannot be checked and cleared will not be allowed to remain in a passenger’s carry-on baggage. Passengers may choose to place these items in checked baggage, if available, or to confiscate them before entering the secure area of the airport. This can include liquids in opaque, ceramic or metallic bottles, or other containers that cannot be analyzed effectively.

If your trip takes you to a security checkpoint in a country that does not allow liquids over 3.4 oz / 100ml in carry-on baggage, you may or may not have the option of placing the item in your checked baggage. If you are unable to place the item in your checked baggage, it may be confiscated.

Child safety seats

When taxiing, taking off, landing, during turbulence or when the Fasten Seat Belt sign is illuminated, children should remain secured in the child safety seat. American only accepts infant seats / child restraints approved by the FAA and certified for use in airplanes. See www.aa.com/children for more information.

Transport of domestic animals

A kennel or pet container that is taken in the cabin counts as your only carry-on baggage, in-cabin pet charges always apply.

Luggage must respect certain dimensions defined by the airline. It is very important that the measurements are accurate. You don’t want to arrive at your destination only to find your luggage is too small or too large. There is no reason to be discouraged, just check in your luggage and request a refund or exchange. There are many ways to deal with issues with your U.S. carry-on baggage.

When packing your American carry-ons, it’s important to pack clothes that you can wear over time, such as shorts and t-shirts. You also want to pack comfortable and inexpensive shoes. It is recommended that you pack your toiletries and other necessities in a separate bag so you know what items are needed and what you can do without. American Airlines will often make you keep your checked baggage for free for some reason, but this is one possibility you’ll want to check in advance. There are many different restrictions on what you can take with your luggage, so it is important that you read the fine print on your ticket.

When purchasing your U.S. carry-on baggage, make sure it meets all of the requirements set out by the airline. You should not buy anything that does not comply with these regulations. If the airline does not have specific requirements set for you, you will need to check with the airline to find out exactly what the requirements are for the bags you are purchasing. American Airlines will allow you to upgrade your plane ticket if you have extra bags or suitcases, so check with your American Airlines airline for their requirements before purchasing your plane ticket.
