How to redeem Business Extra points

Once you’ve accumulated enough Business Extra points, you can redeem them for free flights, flight upgrades, lounge passes, and even elite status. Or you can donate your points to nonprofits, small businesses, or minority businesses.

Use points for free flights

There are three types of Award tickets: Plan Ahead, Anytime and Partner awards. Each has its own price range. The Plan Ahead Awards save space and are the cheapest with flights of 1400 points or more.

For a complete list of award flight prices and options, see the page available on the Business Extra website. All award flights are calculated as a return flight. You can redeem points for one-way flights, but they cost the price of a round trip. You cannot use the return flight on a future flight.

The other option for redeeming flights is to redeem points for reward certificates. These certificates are valid for one year. With the certificate, you can book flights up to 330 days in advance. This makes these certificates the way to go if you need to redeem expiring points but don’t know when you will be traveling.

If you need to change or cancel your flight, you can do so free of charge for the first five days after ticket issuance. Thereafter, a point recovery fee of $ 150 is charged for the first certificate and an additional $ 25 for each additional certificate in the same transaction.

In general, Elite Upgrade Certificates cannot be applied to Business Extra flights. However, Senior Executive Platinum and Concierge Key members can request 500 mile upgrades on qualifying flights.

Redeem Business Extra points for upgrades

National Upgrade Awards (identified by code BXP1) are popular due to their low cost and the ability to apply this upgrade to flights such as AA Business Class flights from coast to coast and to Hawaii. However, for bookings in the cheapest fare classes (code B, N, O, Q or S), no national or international upgrade certificate applies.

Upgrades can only be used after ticket issuance, require upgrade storage, and are valid for one year after issuance.

Redeem Business Extra points for lounge passes

Business Extra members can redeem 300 points for a one-day Admirals Club pass or 3300 points for a one-year Admirals Club membership.

When you redeem points for lounge passes, you must specify which traveler will use them. Passes are not transferable.

Redeem Business Extra points for elite status

Members can even redeem points to earn elite status. Your company can redeem 3,200 Business Extra points to give someone AAdvantage Gold Elite status.

Gold status includes free checked baggage on American Airlines flights, a 24 hour upgrade period, free upgrades on flights under 500 miles, 40% bonus miles on flights, free main cabin seats at check-in as well as free preferred seats.

Give points to your loved ones

Business Extra has added a new redemption option: Donate Points. Business Extra points can now be awarded to nonprofits, small businesses or minority businesses.
